GAF Shingle Warranties Explained — What's Covered and What's Not

GAF is the largest shingle manufacturer in North America. Here's how their warranties actually work, what voids them, and how to get the strongest possible coverage.

If your contractor is installing GAF shingles, you’re getting one of the most popular shingle brands in North America. But the warranty is more complicated than most homeowners realize. Here’s the real story.

The 3 levels of GAF warranty

GAF shingles come with a standard manufacturer warranty automatically. But you can also get enhanced warranties through certified contractors. Here’s the breakdown:

Level 1: Standard Limited Warranty (free, automatic)

Every GAF shingle ships with a basic warranty:

  • Manufacturing defect coverage: Lifetime (limited)
  • Material warranty: Pro-rated after the first 10 years
  • Workmanship: Not covered — you’re on your own with your contractor
  • Wind warranty: Up to 130 mph (with proper installation)
  • Algae warranty: Up to 10 years (StainGuard line)

The catch: After year 10, the warranty pro-rates dramatically. By year 20, you’re getting maybe 20% of the original value. And it doesn’t cover labor — only materials.

Level 2: System Plus (factory-certified contractor required)

Available only when installed by a GAF-certified contractor. Western Edge will become certified.

Improvements over standard:

  • Non-prorated for the first 50 years on materials
  • Extended algae and wind coverage
  • Includes system components (underlayment, ridge cap, starter strip — but only if all GAF brand)

Level 3: Golden Pledge (Master Elite contractors only)

The strongest warranty GAF offers. Only the top 3% of US contractors are Master Elite.

  • 50-year non-prorated materials coverage
  • 25-year workmanship coverage (includes labor!)
  • Tear-off and disposal coverage
  • Misapplication coverage (if your contractor installed something wrong, GAF covers it)

What voids your GAF warranty

Even with the best warranty, here’s what can void it:

Mixing brands: Using non-GAF underlayment, drip edge, or ridge cap on a GAF roof. Components must match for full coverage.

Inadequate ventilation: GAF requires proper attic ventilation. Cooked shingles from bad ventilation = no warranty.

Installation by an uncertified contractor: Standard warranty still applies, but enhanced warranties (System Plus, Golden Pledge) require certification.

Failure to register: For enhanced warranties, you typically have to register the project with GAF within a certain window (usually 30–60 days). Your contractor handles this — make sure they did.

Improper roof slope: GAF shingles are rated for slopes 2:12 and steeper. Below that requires different products.

Modifications by another contractor: If someone else works on your roof later (e.g., for a leak), it can void coverage.

Acts of God: Hail, lightning, falling trees, etc. (That’s what your homeowners insurance is for.)

What to ask your contractor

  1. “Are you GAF certified?” — At minimum, they should be a GAF Certified Contractor. Ideally Master Elite.
  2. “Will you use all GAF accessories?” — Underlayment, drip edge, ridge cap, starter strip, ventilation. Don’t mix brands.
  3. “Will you register my warranty with GAF?” — Required for enhanced warranties. Should be included in your project, no extra charge.
  4. “What’s your workmanship warranty?” — Manufacturer warranty covers materials. Your contractor should add their own workmanship warranty (5–10 years is standard).
